The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that rainfall will continue in multiple parts of the country over the weekend, with at least six regions expected to receive showers of varying intensity, including thunderstorms in some areas.
In its latest advisory released on Friday, April 10, the agency outlined that the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Rift Valley, and the Southeastern Lowlands will remain wet.
The Coast and Northeastern Kenya have also been listed among areas likely to experience rainfall during the same period.
“Rainfall is expected to continue in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Coast and Northeastern Kenya,” the forecast read in part.
According to the update, residents in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley should expect light rains in the early hours of the day.
These conditions are forecast to build up into heavy downpours and thunderstorms later in the afternoon before reducing to showers in isolated areas at night.
In contrast, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, covering counties such as Nairobi and Kiambu, will likely start the day with limited rainfall in a few locations.
However, the situation is expected to change as the day progresses, with moderate rains anticipated in the afternoon and continuing into the night.
For the Coastal region, the forecast shows a different pattern, where a few areas may receive rain in the morning, followed by sunny breaks in the afternoon. Evenings are expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the period.
The latest forecast comes shortly after an earlier update issued on Tuesday, April 7, where the department had already cautioned that rainfall would persist in various regions across the country.
Those areas included the Central Highlands, South Rift Valley, Southeastern Lowlands, Coastal region, Western Kenya, and Northeastern Kenya.
“Rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the country, particularly in: Central Highlands, South Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, Coastal region, Western Kenya and North-eastern Kenya,” read the forecast in part.
At the same time, the weatherman has projected high daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C in parts of the Coast, Southeastern Lowlands, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya.
Meanwhile, cooler nights are expected in regions such as the Central Highlands, parts of the Central Rift Valley, and areas around Mt. Kilimanjaro, where temperatures are likely to drop below 10°C.
